On 22 January 2000, the island of El Hierro was declared Reserve
biosphere to preserve a unique natural, cultural and
landscapes. With just 278 square kilometers, a
maximum height of 1,501 meters and a population of 10,400
inhabitants, is a real paradise for the diversity of landscapes
it offers. Its rich natural and cultural space makes the
60% of its territory and is protected by law.
Within the Biosphere Reserve is located: The
Reserva Marina Punta Restinga Sea of Calm. Its geomorphology
volcanica is responsible for a steep funds, where
can be found underwater caves and mountains.
A landscape that provides free sand with crystal clear waters
a maximum visibility of 30 meters. This transparency of
water provides a community rich in flora and fauna, as the
water clarity allowed to develop at a depth of 70
m, large communities of algae.
La
Marine Reserve was created in 1996. The fisheries sector de la Restinga
plays an important role in its creation, for the protection
an area which was overexploited to maintain that calm throughout the
year. On the other hand also to create a breeding area
multiple species.
Besides the maintenance of life in the marine reserve, was another feature of the reserve makes it special. Situated in the lee of the trade winds (which blow to America almost throughout the year), the reserve is known as Sea the calm in the fact that it is protected from these winds. While on the east side of the Restinga (where they come from the trades) the sea is angry, on the west side (protected from these winds), we find the familiar: Tue plate, mirror, oil raft. Where we can change without the tedious vaiven produced by the waves.
This
also occurs in the Sea of Calm will differ in temperature and nutrient
richness, finding a body of water of tropical nature, inhabited by species
unique to this area.
A very privileged position and characteristics is what makes this a special place to enjoy diving.
